Beginning Block Print Sets
You can buy a kit or buy the items separately. If you buy a kit, you may need to supplement it with certain items, depending on the kit you get. We will go over all the items at the first class. The essential items needed are:
- Inks: black plus extender (and colors if you want to print colors)
- Brayer to roll out ink
- Carving Tools
- Lino or Speedy Carve or similar
- Wooden Spoon
- Inking Plate (you can use a bench hook if your kit has one or get clear acrylic or cheap plastic sheets at dollar store)
- Paper
- Masking Tape
- Clean-up Supplies
Optional
- Baren to use in addition to wooden spoon (some kits have it, some don’t)
- Bench Hook (can use grippy material instead for safety) (a bench hook can double as an inking plate) (some kits have it, some don’t)
Speedball makes a number of different block printing starter sets. There are quite a few options so it can get confusing. At times, these are available at stores such as Michaels or Hobby Lobby or Dick Blick Art Supplies in Fullerton. However, inventory is sketchy so check first before you go if you buy there. Always take a coupon. You can also buy online at art stores or Amazon. Prices tend to vary.
